What Are the Main Features of a TC Oil Seal?

TC oil seal is a common rotary shaft seal with a double-lip construction. Its typical design includes a rubber-covered outside diameter, a spring-loaded primary sealing lip and a secondary lip on the outer side. These features give the seal two different jobs at the same time: keeping lubricant inside the equipment and limiting the entry of external contamination. This is why TC seals are frequently used in rotating equipment such as electric motors, gearboxes, pumps and fans. TC among its spring-loaded dual-lip profiles for oil or grease retention with light dust and fluid exclusion.

The most noticeable part of a TC seal is the relationship between its two lips. The primary lip works directly against the rotating shaft and is responsible for retaining oil or grease. The secondary lip faces the outside environment and acts as an additional barrier against dust, moisture and other contaminants. It does not replace the main sealing lip. Instead, it protects the area around the primary lip from conditions that could otherwise accelerate contamination-related wear. This arrangement is particularly useful when a machine operates in an environment where the shaft is exposed to dust or moisture.

The garter spring behind the primary lip is another important part of the design. During operation, the lip has to maintain steady contact with the shaft. Over time, normal wear, temperature changes and material deformation can affect that contact. The spring provides a continuing radial load on the lip and helps it stay against the shaft as operating conditions change. Shanfeng notes that the spring helps maintain lip-to-shaft contact and compensates to some extent for normal lip wear and compression set.

The rubber-covered outside diameter gives the TC profile another practical advantage. The metal case provides structural support, while the rubber layer forms the outside sealing surface against the housing bore. This construction can be useful when the housing material is relatively soft or when improved static sealing around the outside diameter is needed.

TC seals are generally intended for conventional rotary shaft sealing rather than high-pressure applications. Their typical role is to retain lubricating oil or grease while providing additional protection against light external contamination. Electric motors, gearboxes, pumps and fans are among the applications listed for general-purpose spring-loaded dual-lip rotary seals.

Material selection is another part of the TC oil seal specification. NBR and FKM are commonly used elastomers, but they are not interchangeable in every operating condition. Temperature, sealing medium, shaft speed and other service conditions need to be considered when selecting the material.

In simple terms, the TC oil seal can be understood as a rotary seal built around four related features: the primary lip retains lubricant, the secondary lip helps exclude contamination, the garter spring maintains lip contact, and the rubber-covered outside diameter supports static sealing against the housing. The TC designation itself is not enough to determine whether a seal is suitable for a particular machine. Shaft diameter, housing bore, seal width, material, speed, temperature and the actual sealing medium should all be checked before selection.
