Is a Larger Interference Fit Always Better for an Oil Seal?

A larger interference fit is not always better for an oil seal.

An oil seal needs a suitable interference fit between its outside diameter and the housing bore so that it stays securely in position and maintains static sealing around the outside diameter. If the interference is too small, the seal may not be held firmly enough and can move or leak around the outside diameter during operation. But increasing the interference too much does not automatically improve sealing. It can make installation more difficult and may create other problems during service.

When the interference is excessive, installation force increases. This can become more noticeable with larger seals or when the housing material and machining tolerances are not well controlled. A seal that is forced into an undersized bore may be damaged, distorted or installed unevenly. Once the seal is not seated correctly, its sealing performance can also be affected during operation.

Temperature is another factor that should not be overlooked. An oil seal does not operate at a constant room temperature. Both the seal and housing can change dimension as temperature changes. This is particularly important when the housing is made from aluminum or another material with different thermal expansion characteristics from the seal or metal case.

An interference fit that is too small can cause problems as well. If there is not enough compression between the seal outside diameter and the housing bore, the seal may not remain securely seated. Vibration, temperature changes and long operating periods can make this problem more noticeable. In rotating equipment, reliable sealing at the outside diameter depends on proper housing fit rather than simply relying on the elasticity of the sealing material.

For this reason, the goal of oil seal interference fit design is not to make the fit as tight as possible. It is to find a suitable range based on the seal construction, outside diameter, material, housing material, housing bore tolerance and operating temperature. Shanfeng is shaft seal specifications also use different press-fit allowances for different outside diameter ranges, showing that one fixed interference value cannot be applied to every oil seal.

In practical applications, a properly selected interference fit should allow the seal to be installed without unnecessary damage, keep it securely positioned in the housing, prevent movement caused by vibration or temperature changes, and maintain reliable static sealing around the outside diameter. That is much more important than simply making the interference larger.
