How to Choose Oil Seal Materials: NBR, FKM and PTFE Explained

The right oil seal material depends on the actual operating conditions. Temperature, sealing medium, shaft speed, pressure, lubrication, and exposure to chemicals all influence material selection. NBR, FKM, and PTFE are widely used sealing materials, but they are not interchangeable in every application.

Choosing the material according to the working environment is usually more important than simply selecting the same material used in another machine.

NBR: A Common Choice for General Oil Sealing

NBR, or nitrile rubber, is widely used in conventional oil seals because it provides a useful balance of sealing performance, mechanical properties, wear resistance, and compatibility with many mineral oils and greases.

It is commonly found in general industrial equipment, motors, gearboxes, pumps, agricultural machinery, and other applications where operating temperatures and media remain within the material's suitable range.

NBR is often a practical choice when the application involves conventional lubricating oils and does not require the broader temperature or chemical resistance of more specialized materials.

FKM: When Temperature and Fluid Resistance Matter

FKM is commonly selected when an oil seal must operate under higher temperatures or with fluids that are less suitable for standard NBR.

Compared with NBR, FKM generally offers better resistance to elevated temperatures and better resistance to many oils, fuels, and chemicals. This makes it useful in demanding automotive, industrial, and mechanical applications.

However, FKM should not simply be described as resistant to every chemical or fluid. Compatibility depends on the specific medium, temperature, concentration, exposure time, and FKM formulation.

PTFE: Different Properties for Demanding Applications

PTFE is fundamentally different from conventional elastomeric sealing materials.

Its low friction and strong chemical resistance make it useful in applications where conventional rubber materials may not provide the required performance. PTFE-based shaft seals can be considered for high-speed rotating equipment and environments involving demanding chemicals or temperatures.

However, PTFE selection requires more than looking at the temperature rating. Shaft surface condition, running speed, pressure, installation quality, and the specific seal construction also affect performance.

For example, a stainless steel housing combined with a PTFE sealing element may be suitable for applications involving pumps, fans, compressors, gearboxes, or other equipment where chemical resistance and low friction are important.

Material Selection Should Start With the Working Conditions

There is no single material that is suitable for every oil seal application.

A better selection process starts with the actual operating conditions: What fluid will the seal contact? What is the normal and peak temperature? How fast does the shaft rotate? Is there pressure? Will the seal be exposed to water, dust, chemicals, or other contaminants?

Once these conditions are known, NBR, FKM, PTFE, or another material can be evaluated based on its compatibility with the application.

The material is only one part of the sealing system, but choosing it correctly is an important step toward stable and predictable oil seal performance.
