How Does Oil Seal Material Affect Sealing Performance?

The material of a skeleton oil seal has a direct effect on how the seal performs in actual service. In most cases, the material being discussed is the elastomer used on the sealing lip, because this is the part that stays in contact with the rotating shaft. During operation, the lip is exposed to the sealing medium, temperature, shaft speed and surrounding environment at the same time. If the material is not suitable for those conditions, the seal may harden, swell, wear or lose its elasticity, eventually leading to leakage.

NBR is widely used in conventional oil seals because it provides a practical combination of oil resistance, wear resistance and elasticity under many general industrial conditions. This does not mean that NBR is suitable for every application. When the equipment operates with common mineral oils or greases at moderate temperatures, NBR can often provide the required sealing performance without using a more specialized elastomer.

The material requirement starts to change when the operating conditions become more demanding. Higher temperatures, different lubricants or more aggressive media may require materials such as FKM, HNBR or ACM. FKM is commonly selected when higher temperature and oil resistance are required, while HNBR provides improved resistance to heat, wear and ageing compared with standard NBR.

Material choice also affects how the sealing lip behaves after long periods of rotation. The lip continuously runs against the shaft, so friction, heat and wear gradually change the contact condition. If the material cannot maintain its properties under the actual operating temperature and lubrication conditions, lip wear can increase and the sealing interface may become less stable.

The sealed medium is another important part of the decision. High-temperature resistance alone does not mean that a material is compatible with every oil or fluid. Different base fluids, additives and hydraulic media can affect elastomers in different ways. An incompatible material may swell, soften or lose its original mechanical properties.

For this reason, selecting a seal material should not be reduced to a simple rule such as choosing FKM whenever the temperature is high. Material is only one part of the sealing system. Shaft speed, temperature, lubricant, pressure, contamination and shaft surface condition also influence how the seal will perform. NBR can be a suitable choice for many conventional mineral-oil applications, while higher temperatures, more demanding fluids or stronger ageing requirements may call for a different elastomer.

In practical terms, the effect of material on sealing performance can be seen in three areas: whether the sealing lip can retain the required elasticity over time, whether it remains compatible with the sealed medium, and whether it can control wear under the actual temperature and rotational conditions. The right material is therefore not simply the one with the highest specification. It is the material whose properties fit the working conditions of the equipment.
