What Are the Main Types of Oil Seals?

The main types of oil seals can be classified by their construction and sealing function. Common examples include TC, TB, TA, TG seals, cassette oil seals, and various combination or special-purpose designs. These structures are not simply different shapes. Each one is intended to handle particular requirements such as lubricant retention, contamination protection, installation conditions, shaft speed, and operating environment.

When purchasing an oil seal, it is easy to focus on dimensions first. For rotary applications, however, dimensions are only the starting point. The seal design determines how the seal is intended to work.

Why Is the TC Oil Seal So Common?

The TC oil seal is a widely used double-lip rotary shaft seal design. It normally includes a primary sealing lip and an additional dust lip. The primary lip helps retain lubricant, while the outer lip provides an extra barrier against dust and moisture.

This makes the TC profile suitable for many conventional rotary applications, including electric motors, gearboxes, reducers, pumps, and agricultural machinery.

Its value comes from its broad application range rather than from being designed for only one type of equipment.

What Makes TB and TA Designs Different?

TB and TA seals belong to the same general family of rotary shaft seals, but their case and sealing configurations can differ.

Some applications place more emphasis on installation requirements, while others require a different balance between sealing, contamination protection, and available space.

This is why two machines using the same basic type of rotary shaft seal may still require different structural configurations.

TG Designs Focus More on the Lip Configuration

TG-type oil seals use a different sealing approach. A common example is the TG4 design, which uses multiple sealing elements and an external thread structure to provide additional control of lubricant and external contamination.

Such a design is not intended to replace every conventional oil seal. It is better understood as an option for applications where a different sealing arrangement is needed.

Shaft speed, lubrication, contamination, and installation space should therefore be considered before selecting this type of seal.

Cassette Oil Seals Are Built for Heavier Contamination

A cassette oil seal differs from a conventional rubber-covered rotary seal mainly because it uses a more integrated protective structure.

Multiple sealing and protective elements work together around the shaft, creating additional barriers against external contaminants. This makes cassette designs particularly relevant to agricultural machinery, construction equipment, mining machinery, and other applications exposed to mud, dust, water, and abrasive particles.

In these environments, the sealing challenge is not simply keeping lubricant inside. Preventing contamination from reaching bearings and gears can be equally important.

Combination Seals Address More Demanding Conditions

Some machines require combination or special-purpose seal designs because of high contamination, pressure, temperature variation, or other operating factors.

These seals cannot be selected by size alone. Fluid type, shaft speed, temperature, pressure, contamination level, and installation space all become part of the selection process.

So, while oil seals can be grouped into different structural types, the operating conditions ultimately determine which design makes sense.

Conventional rotary equipment may use a TC oil seal, while heavily contaminated heavy-duty machinery may call for a cassette or combination design. Material selection, such as NBR or FKM, then adds another layer to the decision when temperature and fluid compatibility become important.

The better way to select an oil seal is therefore not to ask which type is “best,” but to first identify the sealing problem and then choose the structure and material that fit the machine.
