What Are the Performance Benefits of a TC Oil Seal with a Garter Spring?

The main benefit of a garter spring in a TC oil seal is that it helps maintain consistent radial contact between the sealing lip and the rotating shaft. This continuous contact supports lubricant retention and helps the seal remain effective as operating conditions change.

For motors, gearboxes, pumps, and other rotary equipment, maintaining the correct lip contact is an important part of sealing performance.

· Why Is the Spring Used?

During operation, the sealing lip is affected by rotation, temperature, material elasticity, and gradual wear.

The rubber lip naturally provides contact pressure, but its condition can change over time. A garter spring positioned around the main sealing lip provides additional radial force to help maintain contact with the shaft.

Its purpose is therefore not simply to create more pressure. It helps keep the sealing force more consistent during service.

· What Happens During Shaft Rotation?

A rotating shaft may experience small amounts of vibration, eccentricity, or changes in operating speed.

Under a suitable design, the spring helps the sealing lip maintain contact with the shaft as these conditions change. This can help reduce the possibility of leakage caused by insufficient lip contact.

The spring therefore acts as a supporting element for the sealing lip rather than functioning as an independent sealing component.

· More Spring Force Is Not Always Better

The spring force needs to match the seal material, lip geometry, shaft diameter, and operating speed.

Excessive radial force can increase friction and heat generation, potentially accelerating lip wear. Insufficient force, on the other hand, may reduce sealing contact.

The goal is therefore stable and appropriate contact force, not maximum spring tension.

· The Practical Advantage

A garter spring mainly helps solve one problem:

keeping the primary sealing lip in effective contact with the rotating shaft.

Combined with the TC seal profile, it supports consistent sealing in many rotating applications such as motors, gearboxes, and pumps.

Actual performance still depends on the complete sealing system, including the elastomer, lip design, shaft surface, lubrication, and operating conditions.
