Which Rubber Material Is Better for Oil Seals in Oil-Based Media?

For many common mineral oils and lubricants, NBR (nitrile rubber) is a widely used material for rubber oil seals. When higher temperatures, fuels, or more demanding chemical conditions are involved, FKM (fluoroelastomer) may be a more suitable option.

So, there is no single material that is best for every oil-based application. The right choice depends on the actual operating conditions.

Why is NBR commonly used with oils?

NBR has good resistance to many mineral oils and lubricants, along with useful elasticity, wear resistance, and mechanical properties.

For common industrial equipment, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, pumps, and motors operating under moderate conditions, NBR can be a practical choice when the temperature and media are within its suitable range.

Another advantage is its balanced overall performance. When an application does not require unusually high temperature or chemical resistance, selecting a more specialized material may not provide a meaningful benefit.

When should FKM be considered?

FKM is often considered when the seal operates at higher temperatures or is exposed to more demanding fluids.

It offers good resistance to elevated temperatures, oils, and many chemical media, making it suitable for applications such as engines, automotive equipment, and industrial machinery where temperature and media compatibility are important.

However, FKM should not automatically be considered a better choice for every oil-based application. Temperature, fluid composition, shaft speed, pressure, and other operating conditions still need to be evaluated.

Oil compatibility is only one part of the selection

Two applications may both be described as “oil-based,” while their actual operating conditions are quite different.

When selecting a rubber oil seal material, it is useful to confirm:

What is the sealing medium?

What is the operating temperature?

What is the shaft speed?

Is there pressure, vibration, or shaft runout?

What are the lubrication conditions?

These factors work together to determine whether the selected elastomer is suitable for long-term service.

A practical starting point

For mineral oil or lubricants + moderate temperatures + general industrial equipment, NBR is often a suitable starting material.

For higher temperatures + more demanding oil or chemical conditions + greater temperature or media resistance requirements, FKM may be considered.

The goal is therefore not to choose the most expensive or specialized material. The better choice is the material that matches the actual working conditions of the oil seal.
